Have you ever heard of geisha? Perhaps you've seen exotic photographs of elegant women, painted white faces, tiny crimson lips, wrapped in luxurious silk kimono. Maybe you've read or seen "Memoirs of a Geisha" written by an American man who presented many lies about the tradition as fact.
Here is your opportunity to meet and learn from a geisha, in Brisbane city! Chizuho-san, a star of the Atami geisha dance theatre will be in Brisbane for one weekend only. She will give one performance at the Brightside, Fortitude Valley on February 10 and then give this one-off class at Mad Dance on February 11.
The dance style of geisha is comparable to the level of muscular development and physical commitment required for ballet although the aesthetics and dance of movement are worlds apart. With a low centre of gravity and exquisite sense of subtlety, geisha use highly controlled movements and gestures to illustrate the narrative of the accompanying movement. This class will give a brief overview of the form and a look at the techniques of walking, kneeling and emotional gesture.
If you don't have Japanese socks, please make sure to bring regular, cotton socks. Those who have yukata or kimono are invited to come traditionally dressed other wise a skirt, preferably slimline, is recommended otherwise wear tights or dance pants. It is advisable and polite to ensure your knees are covered.
